POLICY OF THE ATTLEBORO SCHOOL COMMITTEE

REGARDING

THE INTERNET/ACCEPTABLE USE

The Attleboro School Committee supports the practice of providing staff and students with access to the school system’s electronic communication system, including access to the Internet.

In preparing students for success in the 21st century, the schools should provide staff and students with electronic access to a wide range of information and the ability to communicate with people throughout the world. This electronic communication system will also increase communication within the school system and assist in the sharing of information with the local community, with parents, with government and social service agencies, and with businesses.

The School Committee adopts the following regulations for acceptable use of this technology:

  1. All school system employees and students will have access to the Internet through the system’s networked computers. No agreement will be required. Parents, -however, may specifically request that their child(ren) not be provided such access by notifying the principal in writing.
  2. Students use of the system will be governed by each school.
  3. The school system will establish a web site and will develop web pages that will present information about the school system.
  4. The Superintendent will oversee the local network and will appoint a web site manager to maintain the site.
  5. Each principal will serve as the building-level coordinator for access to the network, approve building-level activities, ensure teachers receive proper training in the use of the system and the requirements of this policy, establish a system to ensure adequate supervision of students using the system, maintain executed user agreements, and be responsible for interpreting this policy at the building level.
  6. The Director of Technology Services will establish a process for setting-up individual and class accounts, set quotas for disk usage on the system, establish a retention schedule, and establish a systemwide virus protection process.
  7. The Attleboro Public School System accounts will be used for education purposes, which include use of the system for classroom activities, self-discovery activities, and professional and career development.
